CSR & Sustainability

MAHLE ANAND Filter Systems (MAFS) delivers on its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments by partnering with SNS Foundation (SNSF). Since the enforcement of the CSR Law in 2014, the company has been regularly undertaking initiatives in areas of education, health, skill development and slum development around its three manufacturing locations of Parwanoo (Solan, Himachal Pradesh), Gurugram (Haryana) and Chengalpattu (Tamil Nadu).

  • Promoting Quality Education in government schools, along with extending scholarships to matriculate female students for engineering education, is one of the primary focus areas of MAFS CSR. Promotion of Quality Education in partner govt. schools is carried out through two main approaches –

    1. Appointment of additional teachers in partner schools who coach students lagging behind in learning outcomes to bridge the gap and bring them to the desired grade level results
    2. Infrastructure Development to improve standards of safety & security, health & hygiene and optimum learning environment

Having worked with schools near Chengalpattu in the past, the current focus of MAFS is on the 11 govt. schools of the industrial township of Parwanoo. Students in these partner schools around Parwanoo were at risk of dropping out due to prolonged school closure as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited or no access to equipment needed for online classes coupled with poor internet connectivity among the target population made continuance of quality education in pandemic conditions a distant dream. Hence to tide over the situation teachers of SNSF adopted different measures when severe lockdown restrictions were not in force. In addition to online teaching to whoever could access, teachers conducted community classes i.e. classes held in open spaces within communities where students reside. The Foundation’s team of teachers organised classes under trees, in terraces and courtyards of individual homes, temples, and for that matter any suitable open space. As a result of these collective efforts, during the academic year 2021-22 742 govt. school students were provided free education (52% primary grade students) thus preventing them from dropping out of mainstream education.

Just prior to the pandemic, MAFS and SNSF completed the construction of washrooms for 124 boys at one of its partner schools in Chengalpattu, Govt. High School, Sithandimandapam. With complete absence of washrooms, all male students of the school were forced to defecate in the open.

    MEDHAVI Scholarship Programme:

MEDHAVI scholarship scheme brings together MAFS’ objectives of employing a large number of women on the shop floor and its corporate responsibility of promoting education and skill development. MEDHAVI, a Hindi word, means a genius, intelligent female. As the name suggests, MEDHAVI is a scholarship programme only for matriculate girls from underprivileged families (annual income less than ₹2 lacs) willing to pursue diploma in mechanical/automobile engineering. Post completion of the diploma, MEDHAVI scholars are supported with job facilitation in manufacturing companies. A MEDHAVI graduate joining employment increases the family income by nearly 150% – 200%.

The programme is centred around MAFS’ business location of Parwanoo with Himalayan Polytechnic, Kala Amb (Dist. Sirmour) and Chandigarh Polytechnic College, Mohali, Chandigarh as the partner polytechnics. It made a beginning in the year 2017 and till date 15 scholarships have been awarded with 10 having successfully completed their Diploma in Engineering. The year 2022 will see the graduation of four more awardees. 70% of the graduates are gainfully employed across ANAND companies of MAHLE ANAND Thermal Systems, MAHLE ANAND Filter Systems, Gabriel India, and Dana Anand India.

  •

  • The company also complements SNSF’s 20+ yearlong partnership with Himachal Pradesh state health authorities in the areas of HIV/AIDS and Reproductive & Child Health.

As an implementing partner of Himachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society (HPSACS), annually SNSF’s team of health educators reaches out to 15000+ at risk population of migrant workers staying away from their families and that of truck drivers. They make these vulnerable populations aware of the modes of transmission of HIV/AIDS, methods of prevention and promotes the understanding of a healthy lifestyle. Testing for HIV infection is also advocated for suspected cases. Generating awareness about TB among the above mentioned target population also forms an integral part of the programme. During 2021-22, 2800 high risk individuals were tested for HIV/AIDS and 16K individuals were screened for TB of which 299 referred to DOTS Centre. Street plays at truck unions, condom depots at local grocery shops, barber shops among others and free health check-up camps are the various strategies adopted by the Foundation’s team to reach the target population.

To give further fillip to the outreach activities in December 2021, MAFS and SNSF organised a Limited Over Cricket Match to commemorate International Day of Migrants (December 18). The contesting teams comprised the migrant workforce engaged in industrial units of Parwanoo, Baddi, Barotiwala, and truck drivers plying in the region. Ms. Shilpi Wadhwa, Head – HR, MAFS honored the Winning and Runner Up Teams and Guest of Honors with trophies and souvenirs.

The work under Reproductive and Child Health falls under the purview of National Health Mission. The focus is on migrant families living in urban areas of Baddi, Barotiwala, Nalagarh and Parwanoo (Dist. Solan H.P.) who being away from their native are hesitant to access the local health machinery. A team of nine health workers annually cover a population of 48K offering/facilitating services in the areas of Antenatal – Check Ups, Immunization, Post Natal Care, Adolescent Health, Family Planning, and Treatment of RTI/STI (Reproductive Tract Infections/Sexually Transmitted Infections) In 2021-22, 1200 expectant mothers were provided access to free antenatal services and 2100 children in the age group of 0-5 years were immunized.

Towards COVID-19 relief, MAFS contributed a sum of MINR 0.5 to CII-ACMA towards setting up of a 300 bedded COVID Care Centre in Gurugram. Additionally, seven govt. rural health care centers in Dist. Solan (H.P.) and ESI Hospital, Parwanoo were supported with safety gear and medical consumables etc.

Under the aegis of MAFS CSR and in partnership with local govt. health authorities in Parwanoo 14 free COVID vaccination camps were held in 2021-22.

  •

  • Skilling underprivileged youth in trades of 2-Wheeler Technician and Electrician as per National Skills Quality Framework (NSQF) with due accreditation of industry leaders Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI) and Schneider Electric India Foundation (SEIF) respectively, forms another core area of MAFS CSR

Both training programmes operate out of MAFS and SNSF’s head office location of Gurugram. The training labs of both courses are housed in the Foundation’s head office. The industry focus of these training programs is strengthened by the fact that 70% of the course is practical technical training with 30% of the time being spent on classroom based training. To make them industry ready, the students also receive training in basic computers, soft skills, financial literacy and functional English. Such inputs help transition the often directionless youth into young professionals.

Beginning 2014, close to 1000 youth have been trained as 2 wheeler auto technicians and 500 have been skilled as electricians in training programmes which last for approx. three months. Almost 80% of the graduates of the two wheeler technician training programme have been placed with authorized service stations of 2 wheeler auto manufacturers such as Honda, TVS, Bajaj, Royal Enfield, Suzuki, Yamaha and KTM. Starting with a monthly salary of 8500 as service technicians, course graduates have made their way up to customer relations executives and service managers drawing a handsome five figure monthly salary of 30K.

Youth skilled as electricians have opted for self-employment or have found jobs in maintenance departments of industries, hotels and gated housing societies. Lemon Tree Hotels, Tricolite Industries, Vatika Builders, Weltech are some of the reputed employers for this trade. Average monthly earnings stand at 12K.

  • Improving quality of life of families living in low income colonies (slums) of Parwanoo:

Nearly 80% of the students attending the town’s 11 govt. schools reside in these settlements. Academic classes are conducted for out-of-school children and school dropouts in a bid to prepare them for formal schooling. Day care or early childhood education centres are in operation to ensure children of working parents receive quality attention and care while their guardians are away at work. In addition to extending education facilities for children, adult literacy facilities with the State Directorate of Adult Education as the technical and certifying partner, form a part of slum development efforts at Parwanoo. Four main slum colonies of Sewanagar, Bohri, Pole Factory, Taksal and others have bi-weekly access to a MBBS doctor accompanied by medical aid at concessional rates.

With the above broad initiatives, for the year 2021-22 MAHLE ANAND Filter Systems CSR stands aligned to four main UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – UN SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, UN SDG 4: Quality Education, UN SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and UN SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
